EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
